Glossy Blogger Aimee on Alexander McQueen’s Enduring Legacy

The late Alexander McQueen undoubtedly was one of the best women’s wear designers that the world has ever seen and all I can say is thank god for Sarah Burton, who is carrying on McQueen’s brand after 16 years of working closely with him.

Sarah’s first outing as creative director of Alexander McQueen was this week at Milan Fashion Week where McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection debuted. The collection, as intended, was reminiscent of the eccentric and English Gentlemen spirit that McQueen entailed with many a top & tail, belted trench, theatrical frock coat and vivid print.

However it wasn’t all same old, same old (as if that can ever be said about a McQueen collection). New shapes were introduced, but very subtly; trousers were baggier and some pieces did have a hint of military to them.

My favourite pieces were a charcoal dusted shirt teamed with tight grey trousers and a cummerbund, laid back sweaters with off the shoulder zips and the vibrant geometric prints which seemed to bring menswear into the printed pantaloon phase.  Of course, oversized dramatic blazers were featured in completely gorgeous fabrics; herringbone, Harris- tweed and amazing colours; creams, whites and beiges.

This collection was very understated for a McQueen collection however it was clear that it was not about making dramatic statements, it was about paying homage to the fantastic designer that was Alexander McQueen.
