Glossy Blogger Aimee on Ethical Fashion.

After spending a summer volunteering in Zambia I returned feeling much more appreciative of my belongings and desperate to continue aiding the less fortunate from home. My love for fashion, although did not fade and I happily found a way of combining my passion for fashion and helping developing communities; Ethical Fashion.

When people hear the term ‘ethical fashion’; it is easy to think of cotton t-shirts, patchwork trousers and horrendous hand me downs. However nowadays ethical fashion labels are just as stylish as our favourite brands. Here are a few of my favourite ethically sourced brands.

MADE’s main aim is to empower developing countries by producing fabulous accessories. The gorgeously unique accessories are designed by influential designers and then sourced and created within disadvantaged communities across East Africa. Made train local artisans in new skills, provide fair wages and support at every level.

Their stunning jewellery (see picture) is absolutely perfect for this seasons warrior look. (www.made.uk.com)

PEOPLE TREE is all about fair trade, working closely with 50 Fair-trade groups in 15 countries. People Tree therefore brings benefits to communities as well as the planet using ethnically sourced materials. In 2008 People Tree won Cosmopolitan’s Best Ethical E-tailer award and in 2009, The Observer ethical award for Fashion.

People Tree recently collaborated with the face of Burberry, Emma Watson, producing gorgeous playsuits, shorts and basic tees. It offers basics and designer pieces for everyone; men, women, children and even home ware. (www.peopletree.co.uk)

The ‘MINNA’ label all started in the Dorset countryside where designer Minna Hepburn started collecting vintage brooches, buttons from antique markets. Minna’s mantra has always been to minimise the impact on the environment by using organic fair-trade and recycled materials wherever possible. All designs are handmade in the UK and Minna ensures minimal wastage as the remnants are used to embellish the garments.

Minna produces gorgeous dresses, tops, tunics and even knitwear. The garments are beautifully feminine and perfect for summer. (www.minna.co.uk)

WHEREFASHION produce handmade designer footwear and accessories which are sourced from small artisans from around the globe. All artisans are paid a fair wage and in turn WhereFashion aim to improve lives for people living in developing communities as well as disadvantaged urban areas around the world. All materials used are natural and environmentally friendly.

The shoes and accessories that WhereFashion produce are trѐs chic featuring brogues, studded wedges and dainty floral embellished ballerina pumps. (www.wherefashion.co.uk)

BOTTLETOP is dedicated to designing and producing ethically sourced and environmentally friendly products.  Bottletop has collaborated with top designers such as Mulberry, Emmanuel Unagro and Malmaison and have been featured in Vogue and Grazia. Their products are constructed with ring pulls by women in East Africa. Bottletop produce belts, bags, coin purses and clutches, my favourite being the Luciana Gold Clutch. (www.bottletop.org).
