Marian Kihogo’s Glossy Column // 12 supermodels in the making, one contract and an infamous jacket.
I’m late for a very important date
Picture this with me… It is manic Oxford street, it is the middle of rush hour(where do this wildebeest herd sized mass of people come from?), no taxi’s abound and a girl has to get to the other end of the long stretch of street faster than her Bedouin pant clad legs can carry her.
I had a hot date with 14 girls, a modelling contract and a crowd of beautiful people and it was obvious that at this tortoise pace rate; I was going to run late.
Security!
Slap on the wrists, I should have known better than to have worn this floaty nude maxi cotton jacket. It really needs its own security. 6 people while I attempt to rush to the event stop me to ask about it. It is a non vintage bespoke piece which I found in vintage shop. It has an identical grey twin sister.
I breathe a sigh of relief when I see the venue in sight. The Elite Model Look UK final presented by Elite London had One Mayfair, St Mark’s Church absolutely packed to its beautiful glassed stained windows.
I spot acquaintances, we locate seats and a sweet girl sitting behind me asks who the jacket is by.
Just in case the palpable tension emanating from the contestants (ranging from 14 to 17) is not enough to keep things interesting, the night sees music by Joseph Xorto, DJ Christopher Tubbs and band Sissy & the Blisters, dance by Maxime Thomas and wardrobe provided by Warehouse.
Andy Warhol got it right
With a 6am call time at a styling appointment the next morning, I have to leave early and unfortunately forgo hearing the results and after party. As I walk out towards the tube station, I get yet another query about the jacket. Talk about 15 minutes of garment fame or what?
