That dreaded time has come yet again, the time where you stand in that changing room deliberating what colours will compliment pre and post tanned skin and shapes that will give you the most convenient tan lines. Yes it is time to shop Bikinis.

The high street seems to already be clearing its rails ready for Autumn/Winter and most of us haven’t even checked in yet. Nevertheless the online shops are still awash with swimwear, which in this post I intend to show you the best, however we must start with the trends.

Swimwear fashion week Spring/Summer 2010 took place in the land of hot bikini bods, Miami, a couple of weeks ago and it seemed that the trends of Spring/Summer have transgressed to swimwear. The likes of Mara Hoffman and Red Carter lapped up geometric prints, asymmetric shapes and eye popping shades whilst White Sands Australia chose candy shades appliquéd with acid tone florals. Regardless all collections, especially Ed Hardy’s collection was served with that very much needed ‘I am almost naked and I don’t care’ attitude.

In terms of shapes all showcased practical pieces that would not create too garish white bits, however of course there was many a bikini/one piece that was more suited to glamorously sitting under a parasol. Mara Hoffman was my favourite collection, I always worry that my personal style is not always shown through my swimwear but Mara’s collection is the perfect combination of boho meets fashionista. Her beaded, tassled and kaftan clad collection was accessorized with turban headgear (very Carrie Bradshaw) and fluro jewellery, which for me really hit the spot. Unlike lots of other designer clobber that costs a small fortune, designer swimwear is not always extreme. Here are my best picks from the high street and designer, look out for Melissa Odabash (a fave of Kate Moss) and the cheap yet stylish pieces of F&F at Tesco.

I used the excuse of being a good friend when going to see the new ‘Twilight’ movie but secretly I wanted to see it.

I am far from a twi-hard and did not really enjoy the previous two films; in fact I actually burst out laughing at some of the scenes (Edward Cullen in slow mo was probably the comedic height of New Moon). However the excitement and obsession the saga has created fascinates me, being the nosey so and so that I am I just have to know what it is all about.

On Sunday I was a ‘good friend’ and went to see Eclipse, with very low expectations of the film I was prepared for the film to be diabolical, however this was not the case. Ok it is by no way the film of the year or worthy of all the awards it seems to get but it was not all that bad. Compared to the previous two films there was a lot more action and although more intense, the romance/soppiness was less. There was a much lighter mood to this movie compared to New Moon (that was awash with misery and teenage moodiness). There were actually parts of the film that I genuinely laughed at because it was actually supposed to be funny and not ridiculous. The comedic highlights were for me Edward’s comment to Jacob’s Adonis body ‘does he own a shirt?’ and the infamous tent scene. (However when Jacob first appears on the screen to some slow motion, jazz instrumental I did have a wee chuckle to myself.)

Twilight is unforgivably a teen film, ridden with jealousy, resentment, romance, six packs and a little sluttiness. I would have liked to see much more action and less of the romance. The idea that Bella is engaged at 18 sends a little shiver down my spine; Sandhu hit the nail on the head in the Telegraph’s review of this film saying that ‘it is hard not to pair Twilight with SATC 2, both films question female integrity. What happened to feminism?’ I know Edward is from the 1800’s but I would hope that the era of feminism did not pass him by!

In terms of style (bar Bella’s surprisingly fashionable cats eye sunglasses), it was pretty disappointing. Too much plaid patterned shirts, baby oil and whiter than white face powder for my liking! This film what ever I or any other critic says will hit the top because of its obsessive following and people, myself included, want to know what the fuss is about. Luckily this time the film lived up to it’s hype, whether the entire saga will is something we will just have to wait and see. My guess is not.

After a day of back to back appointments, I made a quick beeline to Selfridges to pick something up for a client. While there I ducked into the toilets and swapped my day heels for an even higher, hotter pair and did the mandatory lippie and perfume top up.

These heels are not made for walking

Since it was taking forever to hail a cab, I shimmied my way down to the Sapphires Model Management Launch at The Sanderson on Berners Street. So I stated that the heels were hotties but I never said anything about them being comfortable…

Be still my beating heart

What do you get when you blend up cocktails, gorgeous models, a chic interior and a year’s supply of cupcakes?

It was a concoction that was enough to make a girl swoon in delight.

Chitter Chatter

In between Cranberry coolers and being tempted by insanely gorgeous cupcakes I mingled and discussed the merits of wearing shorts by night, why a trip to South Africa is a must do, the issue of models freezing while on location shoots, Courtney Blackman of the Fashion Business Club’s super sexy backless Aqua dress (she is my new girl crush!) and the pros and cons of working as a stylist.

I caught up with Neely Reyes (who looked stunning I’ll have you know!) and Ian Warren, the managing partners of Sapphires Model Management. Their well established Midlands based agency has now been launched in London. Here is to wishing them many delightful adventures down here in London!

I also spotted beautiful illustrator, Daisy de Villeneuve who looked absolutely smouldering in a siren red meets wine lip shade.

All in a night’s work

Sadly I soon had to call it a night due to a crazy early appointment looming the next day.

Thinking back on the night as my cab sped away, I could not help but wonder if I should have perhaps gotten that Cranberry cooler recipe and the name of Daisy’s oh so sultry lipstick shade…

We’re addicted to her blog which offers insights into the latest trends, interviews with industry insiders and of course the cherry on top of an already fabulous cake are the personal style shots of Marian in a dazzling array of outfits.

We caught up with her to find out about how it all began.

Glossy: Your blog Marian Kihogo.com is a staple of the blogroll of many fashionistas. How did you come up with the concept for it. And what do you think sets it apart from other fashion blogs ?

Marian: Mariankihogo.com is a fashion, beauty and culture site in a weblog format. It was a natural evolution of mariankihogo.blogspot.com which was a fashion & style blog. With time I realised with time that Mariankihogo.com only reflected a portion of the things I wanted to cover and thus needed a larger platform to grow. Hence Mariankihogo.com was born. On this new site, I have sections for catwalk, fashion & trends, industry parties and events, features & interviews, shopping, beauty etc.

I think it’s varying sections and diverse regular featured series/segments set it apart from other blogs.

Sometimes a blog that focuses just on personal style and fashion can get a little narcissistic and narrow. I think fashion, beauty and culture all work in a symbiotic way. I like to feature the sort of posts you’d want to share with a friend.

Glossy: Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into the fashion industry ?

Marian: I was always going to do something creative. My mother is an educator and a trained artist. Her mother before her was an artist too and so I grew up with up surrounded by art and fashion. I’d style my younger sister in a variety of co-ordinated looks for make belief fashion show productions. I was heavily into art as well and actually saw fashion as a form of art.

At 14 I styled my first non family member on a whim. This led to more personal styling and personal shopping on a part time basis. I had always written, so thus began to write on a freelance basis for a variety of style, lifestyle and fashion publications.

I did this till the end of high school. I studied fashion and while at college I was fashion writing writing, personal shopping and fashion styling. While at college I became the a contributor to an online publication called Style NOW. Over time I became fashion editor for the magazine.

Most recently I worked for Dirrty Glam and it’s english sister title DG+.

Glossy: How would you describe your personal style ?

Marian: Always evolving, heavily influenced by my state of mind, inspired by everything and nothing. If I had to give it a name I’d call it a mash up of 70’s luxe bohemian-rock and roll-masculine references. I have an incessant need to layer too by the way!

Glossy: Are you more of a high street or designer girl ?

Marian: For me it has never been about labels. What I buy is mostly driven by an instant connection with a piece you know. You know that sort of instant feeling, inspiration a piece gives you.

Does that happen to you?

So I could get this from a piece of vintage YSL, it could be from a pair of Topshop Unique shoes or even a dress by a little known emerging designer. It is all about the thoughts, feelings and inspiration a piece gives me.

Glossy: What do you think are the best and worst things about working in the fashion industry?

Marian: Best = Constant inspiration. Working with the art as created by fashion designers. Seeing it happen live as it hits the seasonal catwalks.

Worst = Seeing so much talent that not make it for the long haul. Fashion is going by faster and faster, with the seasons almost blending into each other.

Glossy: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working ?

Marian: I paint. I like to take the longest random bus rides to no particular destinations. I love to people watch, that sounds super weird but it gives me constant inspiration. People are so inspiring.

I am a big book worm, so I read like there is no tomorrow. I like to build fabric tents in the middle of my living and watch marathons of old movies.

I like to lose myself to all types of music. From music from Mali,Jazz, old school Hip hop, high life from Ghana, soul, music from the Senegambia region of West Africa etc.

Glossy: Could you describe a typical day in your life?

Marian: It could be filled up with anything from dashing about in heels(or brogues when my feet get sore!) to appointments with personal styling clients where we talk about their upcoming styling needs.

I have meetings where I consult with brands, creatives and designers as a creative consultant. I meet with editors in reference to any collaborations and freelance work. There are days when I have PR appointments to pull garments for clients or upcoming shoots.

Sometimes I also have to personal shop with or on behalf of a client.

I also attend press and industry related events during the day and evening which are usually for business. A few for pleasure!

So no two days are the same and each is always bound to be interesting!

Glossy: What advice would you give someone wanting to break into the fashion industry ?

Marian: Learn as much as you can both formally and informally. Intern as much as possible. Be ready to work harder than you ever did before. Be persistent and never ever give up.

Keep up with Marian on her blog – http://mariankihogo.com

And on twitter – @Marian_Kihogo
